When we decided to roast specially selected coffee we wanted to find as many ways as possible to do so with purpose. It is in this way that The Co.Lab was born. With each batch of single origin or custom blend we roast we are considering how this delicious beverage can lever change in your community.
It is through your support that we have built collaborative relationships with four organisations who are embodying the values and goals we have. Find out how each of these amazing organisations are changing the social landscape through initiatives that have human flourishing at their core.
- TEAR Australia
TEAR Australia is a movement of Christians in Australia responding to the needs of poor communities around the world. Their motivation comes from their belief that God loves all people, and in Christ offers them the opportunity of a new life. They believe that God is just, and has particular care for the poor and those who suffer as victims of injustice.
They work in partnership with other Christian groups, including churches, relief and development agencies and community-based organisations, which are working with the poor in their communities. They seek to build effective relationships with these partners, grounded in mutual respect, trust and accountability.
We at The Co.Lab have chosen to partner with them on their project in Ethiopia, Addis Ababa where they have partnered with the local organisation E-WAR (Ellita – Women at Risk). The work they do seeks to enable women involved in prostitution to exit the work through rehabilitation and livelihoods training, and to improve community awareness through education so that fewer women are likely to enter the commercial sex trade to earn a living.
Each small goal of $1000 helps E-WAR to provide a new work opportunity for one young women! Thanks for partnering with us by purchasing ethical and sustainable coffee.
Kooda is a start-up in our home state of Western Australia who have developed a commercial composting program to reduce the amount of waste heading to landfill and subsequently reduce our state's negative environmental impact. Their name comes from the Nyoongar language, who are the local indigenous peoples of WA and is the word for carrying or gathering basket.
We love what Kooda have already achieved in turning tonnes of waste into useful compost and want to champion their work. Head to their website to sign up your business or home to their composting program.
We are currently funding new composting plant equipment for their brand new facility that can process 15 tonnes of organic waste each week! Each $1000 we raise together gives them the opportunity to expand their work to provide this service for all of Western Australia.
Crossways is a social enterprise located in Kelmscott, Western Australia whose purpose is to empower people by giving them the tools, skills and experience they need to take positive steps towards a more fulfilling life. They have done this for several years through their Op-shop, low-cost pantry, professional counselling, Meeting Place cafe and Menshed.
We have partnered with Crossways to develop their cafe and build a long term hospitality program for high school students and many others needing the right help to enter the hospitality industry! Each $1000 provides Crossways with the necessary funds to run barista training workshops for 10 people at their facility in Kelmscott.
GIMA is the work of Flavia and Gabriel Oliveira, who own and operate the Bom Jesus coffee plantation in the Alta Mogiana of Sao Paulo. Their ancestors have been running plantations for the last 150 years and Flavia and Gabriel wanted to build into their local community. In 2008, they launched GIMA (The Intercity Games for the Environment), a project that aims to promote social and environmental responsibility and to create environmental awareness for the younger generations. In 2017, GIMA celebrated its 10th edition and reunited more than 900 children from 5 surrounding towns, on a day to celebrate life and spread love. During this special day, there are exciting games, involving adults and children around our greatest gift: the environment.
We are proud to be supporting their farm by using their coffee in our Terroir Blend and our Heritage Blend, but also through donating much needed funds to their work through GIMA. For every $1000 we are able to donate 15 bicycles to local disadvantaged children which enables them to be able to travel to school and other social needs they have. Thanks for partnering with us in making change in these children's lives.
